Dear Members of MMA-UK,
We wrote to the Honourable Governor of West Bengal recently expressing our feeling about the tragic incident in RG Kar Medical College. The Honourable Governor has kindly responded to our letter, please find below our letter to the Honourable Governor and his gracious reply.
Honourable Governor,
With great regret, we have learned of the tragic passing of a trainee doctor in R G Kar Medical College, Kolkata. We convey our deep sorrow and indignation, and we denounce this heinous act that has rocked not only the medical community but everyone who respects justice and women’s dignity. Our organisation, MMA-UK represents thousands of doctors and dentists living and working in the UK. We would like to offer our support to the bereaved family, the Medical College students, and the public. Examining the safety of women in general as well as doctors in particular has been the demand from all over. We have read through your plans and ideas- including the ‘Abhaya’ project, with great enthusiasm. As doctors of Indian descent, we take it to heart our motto of ‘beti bachao, beti padhao’, and we would like to extend our whole support to this cause. We envisage our daughters to lead a life as Piaf laid out, “La vie en rose’. The reality seems to be quite different though. As long as we have people in thrall to the might of contemporary evil, we will struggle- but we won’t stop trying.
As the head of the state of West Bengal, we humbly request your assurance that changes will be implemented. A shift that results in our “head held high and mind free from fear.” Although we recognise that social backgrounds are irrelevant in this context, you would undoubtedly understand our position.
Thanking you,
Respectfully,
Dr Ajith Kartha
